Kate Kading’s Debut Novel, “ON SCENE”

Near a tiny town in Northern Saskatchewan, it fell to Sergeant Walter Regitnig and his canine partner Bruce to track a killer. He’d hunted men before, but never one who’d murdered his best friend.

Speculation is a dangerous thing when dealing with someone’s life. What causes people to react the way they do? Say the things they say?

Fear. Anger. Mental instability. Revenge.

Sometimes there is no clear motive at all.

The absence of why is where speculation is born.

Speculation can kill a man.

On October 9, 1970, it killed two of them.

On Scene is fiction based on fact, laying out, in stark detail, the murders of two Saskatchewan RCMP officers in 1970 that sparked one of the longest and most intense manhunts in Canadian history. Through extensive interviews, formal information requests, and piles of research, crime author Kate Kading takes readers on an emotional game of hide and seek across the Prairies. Not the Mad Trapper, in no way tied to the Shell Lake Massacre, this is the Robertson Manhunt and unless you lived local to this case, you’ve likely never even heard of it. On Scene gives you a deep, real-life glimpse into the lives of Sgt. Robert Schrader and Cst. Douglas Anson, the tragic grief suffered by their families, and the turmoil inside the officers tasked with tracking down their killer.

Amazon Customer 5 Stars: I would probably be done the book if it wasn’t for having to stop to dry my eyes. The way that Kate has managed to convey the emotions of the characters has left me weeping! The best part is the author’s notes in the back of the novel to let the reader know what is fact and what is fiction.

Amazon Customer 5 Stars: Riveting! I loved this book. Kading writes with clarity and empathy. The depth of research brings this account to life. This is a story that all Canadians deserve to know.
