GREAT question, I’d love to tell you! Let’s face it, there is nothing quite like the OG Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack. As a huge fan myself, I can’t compare it to anything on TV, Canadian or otherwise, but do not despair…there are so many online options for unsolved cases, missing persons, and other true crime cases in Canada.
My personal favourite is a website called Unsolved Canada, and yes, you absolutely CAN read about the case I am basing my next book on. Tersilla Bonthoux (you will see various spellings of all her names online) went by ”Cecile”, disappeared from the Titanic District (very close to where I live) in 1954. Turns out, she was the Great Great Grandmother of a very dear friend of mine. One night a couple of years ago she shared the story with me, perhaps over a glass of wine or two, and I asked if her Grandmother’s disappearance could be my next book. And here we are.
I’ve done a few preliminary interviews with some remaining family members, searched through the newspaper archives, and sent in a formal request for the case file to the Access to Information and Privacy branch. No trace of Cecile Bonthoux has ever been found, even after the Cold Case Unit followed a potential lead in 2009 and used ground penetrating radar to try to locate her.
This yet untitled book will come out next year. Will we solve the case in the meantime?
I mean, Stranger Things have happened.
And I am no slouch at this investigation thing.
